Our Work

We believe that the best way for us to do this is by developing or participating in projects that promote our dedication to ensuring the sustainable future of our land, wildlife, people and local businesses.

WTAY is always interested in new projects and welcomes any suggestions from our members, industry partners, and the public. If you have a particular idea that you believe coincides with our mandate, please do not hesitate to contact the office at 867-668-3369 or by emailing info@wtay.com.

STAFF HOUSING

WTAY is currently working with private sector to find solutions for Tourism Industry staff housing issues. Short term and shared accommodations was our top used and required capacity need. This is an area we are focused on with support from private sector rental companies. We will be developing a Yukon Short Term Rental Directory to be released in March of 2025. Please see our results of the Housing Subsidy Pilot project for more information. This project was supported and funded by CanNor.

Environment

Yukon Public Lands Legislation - Tourism Engagement

The Yukon Government engaged with the public and industry concerning the Lands Act and Land Use Planning through the Summer and Fall of 2024. WTAY and TIAY will be coordinating the next opportunity to engage. Keep an eye out for this invitation in later 2025.

Fishing Licensing

Engaging with YG Environment on Fishing Licensing to support communication on regulations, group booking and offline access. An engagement session was held on December 17th, and WTAY will continue to work with the Department of Environment on finding solutions short and long term for industry needs. Further updates will be provided in January of 2025.

Sustainability

CTRRC, YG, and CTFN support sustainable fish and wildlife management in the Southern Lakes.

These partners are engaging with all stakeholders in the development of a Community-Based Fish and Wildlife Plan for over the next 5 years. WTAY will continue to work closely with Carcross Tagish Renewable Resource Council (CTRRC), YG and Carcross Tagish First Nation (CTFN) to gain understanding, knowledge and support their efforts in sustainable management. We participated in the December 17th, online community engagement session.

Sustainability Working Group

WTAY has been a part of and sits on the Yukon Government Sustainability Working Group. This group was originally formed by Yukon Government as a requirement to our part of the INSTO - UN World Tourism Organization. We are considered one of these sustainable tourism observatories. INSTO seeks to support and connect destinations that are committed to regular monitoring of economic, environmental and social impacts of tourism, to unlock the power of evidence-based decision making at the destination-level, fostering sustainable tourism practices locally and globally.

The working group is undergoing strategic planning to clarify the groups role and develop clear active objectives beyond the requirements for INSTO.
